SS Celtic

The SS Celtic was a transatlantic ocean liner built for the White Star Line. She was the second of the "Big Four" liners, preceded by the SS Oceanic and followed by the SS Cedric and SS Baltic.

Launched in 1901 from the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland, the Celtic entered service in 1901, sailing on the Liverpool-New York route. At the time of her launch, she was the largest ship in the world, surpassing the Great Eastern in gross tonnage.

The Celtic was primarily designed for passenger transport, catering to both first-class and steerage passengers. She offered luxurious accommodations for her time, including spacious staterooms, dining saloons, and promenades. The ship also carried significant amounts of cargo.

During World War I, the Celtic served as an armed merchant cruiser and later as a troop transport. In 1918, she was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Irish Sea but remained afloat. She was subsequently repaired and returned to commercial service.

In 1928, the Celtic ran aground off the coast of Cobh (Queenstown), Ireland. Efforts to refloat her were unsuccessful, and she was eventually declared a total loss. Over the next several years, the ship was gradually dismantled on site.
