Civic booklet and enlistment booklet (Argentina)
In Argentina, the libreta cívica (civic booklet) and the libreta de enrolamiento (enlistment booklet) were important identification documents issued to citizens. The libreta cívica was primarily used for voting and was issued to citizens upon reaching voting age (18 for males, and for females after universal suffrage was granted). It contained personal information, voting records, and sometimes other official stamps or notations.
The libreta de enrolamiento was issued to males upon registration for military service. It served as proof of enrollment and contained details about the individual's military service status, including any exemptions, deferments, or assigned postings. Like the libreta cívica, it also included personal information.
Both documents were considered essential for many administrative tasks, including opening bank accounts, obtaining a driver's license, and generally proving identity. They were phased out and replaced by the Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) in card format, starting in the late 20th century. While the DNI serves the same function of identification, the libreta cívica and libreta de enrolamiento remain historically significant documents, reflecting Argentina's civic and military history.
