Danilo II (Archbishop of Serbs)

Danilo II was the Archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church from 1324 to 1337. He succeeded Archbishop Nikodim I and preceded Archbishop Joanikije I. Danilo II is venerated as a saint in the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Very little is definitively known about his early life prior to becoming archbishop. His tenure is primarily noted for his literary activity and patronage of the arts. He is traditionally credited with authorship of portions of the Lives of the Kings and Archbishops of Serbia (also known as the Serbian Royal Genealogies), a collection of biographies of Serbian rulers and church leaders, which is an important source for the history of Serbia in the 13th and 14th centuries. He specifically is believed to have written, or commissioned the writing of, the biographies of King Stefan Uroš II Milutin, King Stefan Uroš III Dečanski, and possibly that of himself, and to have overseen the compilation of the entire work.

Danilo II also oversaw significant construction and renovation projects within the Serbian Orthodox Church, including the completion of the Church of the Virgin Hodegetria in Peć. His efforts contributed to the strengthening of the Serbian Church's position and influence during a period of political instability in the region. He is commemorated on December 20 (according to the Julian calendar).
