Besseggen
Besseggen is a popular and challenging mountain ridge hike in Norway, located in the Jotunheimen National Park. The name refers specifically to the narrow ridge that lies between the lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet. Gjende has a distinctive emerald green color due to glacial meltwater, while Bessvatnet is a deep blue and one of Norway's purest lakes.
The hike across Besseggen offers spectacular panoramic views of these contrasting lakes and the surrounding mountain landscape. It is typically a one-day hike, covering a distance of approximately 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and involving a climb of around 1200 meters (3937 feet). The most challenging section involves a steep ascent after crossing a short boat trip on Gjende from Gjendesheim or Memurubu. This ascent requires some scrambling over rocks.
The hiking season for Besseggen typically runs from late June to mid-September, depending on snow conditions. Due to its popularity, particularly during peak season (July and August), it is recommended to start the hike early in the morning to avoid crowds. Hikers should be in good physical condition and wear appropriate hiking boots and clothing, as the weather in the mountains can change rapidly. While not technically demanding, the exposed nature of the ridge and the overall length of the hike make it a challenging experience.
The area surrounding Besseggen is rich in hiking trails and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Gjendesheim and Memurubu are popular starting points and offer accommodation and transportation options.
