Steve Turner (guitarist)
Steve Turner (born March 28, 1965) is an American guitarist, best known as a member of the Seattle-based grunge band Mudhoney.
Turner co-founded the hardcore punk band Mr. Epp and the Calculations in 1981 with Mark Arm (then known as Mark McLaughlin). He subsequently played in Spluii Numa before forming Green River in 1984, also with Mark Arm, as well as Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard. Green River is considered one of the pioneers of the grunge sound.
After Green River disbanded in 1987, Turner briefly played in a band called Ducky Boys, while Arm formed the short-lived band The Thrown Ups. In 1988, Turner and Arm reunited to form Mudhoney with Dan Peters and Matt Lukin. Mudhoney was one of the first bands signed to Sub Pop Records and became a key band in the burgeoning grunge scene. Mudhoney achieved significant critical acclaim and continues to record and tour.
In addition to his work with Mudhoney, Turner has also been involved in other musical projects, including performing with the side project Monkeywrench, featuring members of other Seattle bands. He has also collaborated with various artists and contributed to soundtracks.
Turner's guitar playing is characterized by its raw, energetic style and use of feedback and distortion, elements that have been influential in the development of grunge music. He primarily uses a Fender Telecaster guitar.
