Minister of State (Belgium)
Minister of State (French: ''Ministre d'État'', Dutch: ''Minister van Staat'') is a Belgian honorary title conferred upon former ministers who have rendered outstanding service to the state. It is not a position within the government, carrying no specific responsibilities or powers. The title is granted by Royal Decree and is generally bestowed on former prime ministers and other prominent figures who have held high-ranking ministerial positions and made significant contributions to Belgian political life.
The title grants its holder certain privileges, mainly precedence at official ceremonies and events. While not formally part of the government, Ministers of State are sometimes consulted on matters of national importance due to their experience and expertise. The number of individuals holding this title has increased over time, reflecting both the longevity of some politicians' careers and the increasing number of individuals deemed worthy of the honor. There is no specific criteria outlining the exact qualifications for receiving the title, though it is almost exclusively given to individuals who have served as ministers for a considerable length of time. The awarding of the title is at the discretion of the reigning monarch, acting on the advice of the government. The process is not publicly advertised or subject to a specific nomination procedure.
