Dan Donnelly (boxer)

Dan Donnelly (1788-1820) was an Irish professional boxer, known as "the Champion of Ireland." He achieved fame during the bare-knuckle boxing era and is considered one of Ireland's first sporting heroes.

Born in Dublin, Donnelly rose to prominence through a series of successful fights, showcasing considerable strength and skill. His most famous victory was against English champion Tom Oliver in 1815 at the Curragh Racecourse in County Kildare. This fight, said to have drawn tens of thousands of spectators, solidified his legendary status. Other notable opponents included George Cooper and Jack Carter.

Donnelly's career was relatively short, spanning only a few years. He faced accusations of enjoying the spoils of his victories too readily, leading to a decline in his health and fortune. He died in Dublin in 1820 at the age of 31.

Despite his short life, Donnelly's legacy endures. He is remembered in Irish folklore and popular culture. His arm is preserved and can be seen at a pub in County Meath. Various stories and legends surround his life and fights, often embellished over time, contributing to his mythical persona. "Donnelly's Hollow," the location of his fight against Oliver, remains a landmark at the Curragh, a testament to his enduring popularity.
