Curt Bois

Curt Bois (December 5, 1901 – July 5, 1991) was a German actor whose career spanned eight decades, from the silent era to late 20th-century cinema. Born Kurt Boas in Berlin, Germany, he was known for his versatility, appearing in over 200 films and stage productions.

Bois began acting professionally as a child, quickly gaining recognition for his comedic timing and expressive features. He found early success in German cinema, frequently playing charming rogues and endearing eccentrics.

With the rise of Nazism in Germany, Bois, who was Jewish, emigrated to the United States in 1934. He continued his acting career in Hollywood, often portraying European characters in supporting roles.

Following World War II, Bois returned to Europe, dividing his time between film and stage work in Germany, France, and other countries. He achieved international acclaim late in his career for his role as the sympathetic pickpocket in Wim Wenders's 1987 film Wings of Desire. This performance revitalized his career and introduced him to a new generation of audiences.

Bois's long and prolific career is a testament to his talent and adaptability. He worked with some of the most renowned directors in film history, including Alfred Hitchcock, Max Ophüls, and Billy Wilder. He remains a significant figure in German cinema and a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
