Crossover (Image Comics)
Crossover is a comic book limited series published by Image Comics, created and written by Donny Cates, with art by Geoff Shaw and Dee Cunniffe. The series premiered in November 2020 and concluded in November 2021 with a double-sized issue #12.
The core concept of Crossover revolves around the premise that comic book characters, from various publishers and independent creations, suddenly begin appearing in the real world, starting in Denver, Colorado. This phenomenon, initially believed to be a hoax or mass delusion, is quickly confirmed as genuine.
The appearance of these fictional characters, often possessing their established superpowers, causes widespread panic, destruction, and societal upheaval. The United States government responds by quarantining Denver, creating a literal "crossover" point between fiction and reality.
The series follows Ellie, a comic book store employee and aspiring creator who becomes entangled in the unfolding crisis. Along with other individuals, including Ryan Lowe (Ellie's friend) and Otto, a person claiming to be from the comic book world, she attempts to navigate the increasingly dangerous and unpredictable landscape. The narrative explores themes of faith, fandom, responsibility, the blurring lines between reality and fiction, and the potential consequences of wish fulfillment.
Crossover also acts as a commentary on the comic book industry itself, with nods to various creators and publications, and addresses the complex relationship between creators, fans, and the characters they love (or despise). The series frequently breaks the fourth wall and engages in metafictional storytelling.
Notable characters featured in the series, alongside the original creations, include cameos and appearances of characters from various comic book universes, albeit often with legally distinct variations due to rights and licensing issues.
