São Caetano (Madalena)
São Caetano is a locality (freguesia) situated within the municipality of Madalena, on the island of Pico, in the Azores archipelago of Portugal. It is located on the western coast of the island, north of the municipal seat of Madalena.
São Caetano is primarily a rural community, with its economy historically focused on agriculture, particularly vineyards that contribute to the production of Pico wine. The landscape is characterized by volcanic features and the traditional stone walls that enclose the vineyards, a defining characteristic of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The parish has a church dedicated to São Caetano (Saint Cajetan), the namesake of the freguesia. The patron saint's feast day is typically celebrated annually.
The population of São Caetano is relatively small and has experienced some decline in recent decades, mirroring demographic trends in other rural areas of the Azores.
Transportation infrastructure connects São Caetano to other parts of Pico Island, including the airport and ferry terminals in Madalena. Tourism, focused on the natural beauty and unique viticultural heritage of the island, plays an increasingly important role in the local economy.
