USS Avocet (AMCU-16)

USS Avocet (AMCU-16) was a United States Navy ship built during World War II. Originally designated a LSM(R)-507, a Landing Ship Medium (Rocket), it was reclassified as an AMCU - Coastal Minesweeper, Underwater Locator on 7 March 1952 and renamed Avocet on 11 March 1952.

As an LSM(R), it participated in operations in the Pacific Theater during World War II, providing close fire support for troops ashore through its rocket batteries. Its later conversion to an AMCU reflected the changing nature of naval warfare and the growing importance of mine countermeasures and underwater search capabilities in the post-war era. As a Coastal Minesweeper, Underwater Locator, the Avocet was tasked with detecting, locating, and neutralizing underwater mines, as well as searching for lost objects or vessels on the seabed.

The Avocet ultimately served in the U.S. Navy until it was struck from the Naval Vessel Register. Its service history reflects the versatility of naval vessels and their adaptation to evolving strategic needs.
