Cricket (roofing)
A cricket in roofing is a sloped structure designed to divert water away from a roof protrusion, such as a chimney, dormer, or wall. It is typically constructed on the high side of the obstruction to prevent water and debris from accumulating behind it. Crickets are important for preventing water damage and extending the life of the roof. The size and slope of the cricket are determined by the size of the obstruction and the expected amount of rainfall in the area. Without a cricket, water can pool, leading to leaks, rot, and structural damage to the roof and the building below. Crickets are usually made of wood framing and covered with roofing materials similar to those used on the rest of the roof, such as shingles, metal, or tile. The angle of the cricket's slope allows water to flow freely around the obstruction and down the roof.
