Paul Smart (sailor)
Paul Smart (1943-2018) was an American sailor who won a gold medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, competing in the Star class alongside crewmate Hilary Smart, his father.
Smart, born in New York City, came from a family steeped in sailing tradition. He and his father’s gold medal victory marked a unique moment in Olympic history, as they were the only father-son team to ever win a gold medal in sailing together.
Beyond his Olympic success, Smart remained active in the sailing community throughout his life. He was a respected figure and contributed significantly to the sport.
