Condrieu
Condrieu is an appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in the Rhône wine region of France. It is located on the west bank of the Rhône River, about 40 kilometers south of Lyon. The appellation is dedicated exclusively to white wines made from the Viognier grape.
Condrieu wines are known for their intense aromas of apricot, peach, honeysuckle, and violet. They are typically full-bodied with a rich, oily texture and moderate acidity. The wines are often best enjoyed within a few years of release, although some can age gracefully for several years.
The vineyards of Condrieu are situated on steep, terraced slopes, predominantly composed of granite soils. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters. This combination of soil, climate, and grape variety contributes to the unique character of Condrieu wines.
The Condrieu AOC was established in 1940. Production is relatively small, making these wines sought after and often expensive. Within the Condrieu appellation is the smaller, prestigious AOC of Château-Grillet, a single-estate vineyard also producing only Viognier.
