City Hall Post Office and Courthouse (New York City)

The City Hall Post Office and Courthouse, also known as the Federal Building and Post Office, was a monumental Beaux-Arts style building located at 31 Park Row in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It served as both a United States Post Office and a federal courthouse. Constructed between 1884 and 1892, it was designed by architects Alfred B. Mullett and Willoughby J. Edbrooke.

The building was notable for its elaborate facade, incorporating granite, marble, and numerous sculptures. Its imposing presence and grand scale were intended to reflect the power and authority of the federal government. It faced City Hall Park, further enhancing its civic importance.

Over time, the building became functionally obsolete due to the growing needs of both the postal service and the federal court system. It was ultimately demolished in 1939 to make way for a new courthouse building, the United States Courthouse for the Southern District of New York, which currently stands on the site. The demolition was controversial at the time, as it was considered a significant loss of a prominent architectural landmark.
