Channel 9 (Israel)

Channel 9, also known as Israel Plus (Israel Plus), was an Israeli television channel that primarily broadcast in Russian. It was aimed at the large Russian-speaking population of Israel, which constitutes a significant portion of the country's immigrant population.

The channel offered a variety of programming, including news, current affairs, entertainment, and original Israeli productions dubbed or subtitled in Russian. Its news broadcasts often provided a perspective on Israeli and international events tailored to the interests and understanding of its Russian-speaking audience. Entertainment programming included both imported shows from Russia and other countries, as well as locally produced dramas, comedies, and talk shows.

Channel 9's establishment reflected the growth and importance of the Russian-speaking community in Israel following the large waves of immigration from the former Soviet Union during the 1990s. The channel aimed to provide a valuable resource for this community, offering access to information and entertainment in their native language.

In 2013, the channel was acquired by a consortium headed by businessman Gershon Zak, and underwent significant changes in its management and programming strategy.

Ultimately, Channel 9 ceased broadcasting in December 2016, as its broadcast license was not renewed by the Second Authority for Television and Radio. It was replaced by a new Russian-language channel called "Israel 1," which won the broadcast tender. While the content shifted, the fundamental purpose of providing programming for the Russian-speaking population of Israel remained.
