Charles Murphy (Canadian politician)

Charles Murphy (December 8, 1862 – November 24, 1935) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and cabinet minister. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, he pursued a legal career and became a prominent figure in the Liberal Party of Canada.

Murphy served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Russell, Ontario, from 1908 to 1925. During his time in the House of Commons, he was a strong advocate for the interests of his constituency and a loyal member of the Liberal caucus.

He held several significant portfolios in the Canadian government under Prime Ministers Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William Lyon Mackenzie King. Murphy served as Secretary of State for Canada from 1908 to 1911 in Laurier's cabinet. He was later appointed Postmaster General in King's government, serving from 1921 to 1925.

As Postmaster General, Murphy oversaw the administration of the postal service during a period of significant change and growth. He played a role in modernizing the postal system and improving its efficiency.

Charles Murphy was a devout Roman Catholic and was active in Catholic organizations. He was known for his eloquence and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He retired from politics in 1925 and died in 1935. His legacy includes his contributions to Canadian politics and his dedication to public service.
