Charles Brown (New Zealand politician)

Charles Brown (1820 – 1904) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician.

Born in England, Brown emigrated to New Zealand and became a prominent figure in the early settlement of Taranaki. He served as a member of the New Plymouth Provincial Council from 1853 to 1876, holding various positions including Superintendent from 1857 to 1861 and again from 1865 to 1869. During his time on the Provincial Council, Brown was involved in numerous initiatives related to infrastructure development, land management, and the relationship with Māori.

Brown was elected to the New Zealand House of Representatives for the Grey and Bell electorate in 1861, serving until 1866. He later represented New Plymouth from 1869 to 1875 and again from 1881 to 1884. He was a strong advocate for the interests of the Taranaki region within the national government, particularly regarding land issues and the aftermath of the New Zealand Wars.

Throughout his political career, Charles Brown was known for his pragmatism and dedication to public service. He played a significant role in shaping the development of Taranaki and New Zealand during a period of considerable social and political change. He retired from national politics in 1884 and died in 1904.
