Peep Show (British TV series)
Peep Show is a British sitcom created by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb. It was written by Armstrong and Bain, with additional material from other writers including Simon Blackwell, Tony Roche, and Jon Brown. The series follows the dysfunctional lives of Mark Corrigan (Mitchell) and Jeremy "Jez" Usborne (Webb), two flatmates in their thirties living in Croydon, South London.
A key stylistic feature of Peep Show is its use of point-of-view shots and internal monologues. Much of the action is filmed from the perspective of either Mark or Jeremy, giving the audience a uniquely intimate and often uncomfortable insight into their thoughts and feelings. This technique, rarely used in sitcoms, allows for a deep exploration of their insecurities, anxieties, and often selfish motivations.
The show premiered on Channel 4 on September 19, 2003, and ran for nine series, concluding on December 16, 2015. Peep Show is known for its dark humour, social awkwardness, and satirical observations on modern British life. It garnered critical acclaim throughout its run, winning two British Academy Television Awards for Best Situation Comedy in 2008 and 2011. Despite its critical success, the show maintained a relatively niche audience during its original broadcast, but has since gained a larger following through DVD sales, streaming services, and online clips. The series is considered a cult classic and is notable for its innovative use of subjective camera techniques within the sitcom format.
