Champollion (crater)

Champollion is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the northeast of the huge walled plain Apollo, and to the southwest of the crater Fersman.

This crater is relatively well-formed, with a sharp-edged rim that has suffered only minor erosion. The inner walls are terraced in places, and slope down to a relatively level interior floor. There is a small central peak formation at the midpoint of the floor. A few tiny craterlets lie along the rim edge and interior.

Champollion is named after Jean-François Champollion, the French scholar who deciphered the Rosetta Stone.
