Carl Peterson (American football)
Carl Peterson (born January 16, 1943) is an American former football executive, best known for his long tenure as the general manager and president of the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL).
Peterson joined the Chiefs in 1989 and quickly turned around a struggling franchise. He drafted several key players who became cornerstones of the team, including Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith, and Will Shields. He also hired head coach Marty Schottenheimer, forming a successful partnership that led the Chiefs to consistent playoff appearances throughout the 1990s.
Under Peterson's leadership, the Chiefs were known for their strong defense and consistent winning record. They won seven AFC West division titles (1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2006) and made the playoffs eleven times during his tenure. However, the team never reached the Super Bowl.
Peterson stepped down as president and general manager of the Chiefs in December 2008. He is credited with transforming the Chiefs into a perennial contender and for his dedication to the Kansas City community. Following his departure from the Chiefs, he became a consultant and has remained involved in the sport. He was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2023.
