Camelford

Camelford is a town and civil parish in north Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of Launceston and 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Tintagel.

Historically, Camelford served as a market town for the surrounding agricultural area. Its location on the River Camel, from which it derives its name (Cam-alan-ford, or crooked Alan's ford), facilitated its development. The town's strategic importance was further solidified when it became a parliamentary borough in the 16th century, sending two members to Parliament until the Reform Act of 1832.

Today, Camelford serves as a local centre for commerce and tourism. Its proximity to the north Cornwall coast and attractions such as Bodmin Moor makes it a convenient base for exploring the region.

In 1988, the town was the site of a major water pollution incident, known as the Camelford water pollution incident, where twenty tonnes of aluminium sulphate were accidentally added to the public water supply. This event had significant long-term health consequences for the residents and remains a significant part of the town's history.

Camelford has a town council and is part of the Cornwall Council unitary authority. The town is served by several primary and secondary schools in the wider area. Its economy is primarily driven by tourism, agriculture, and local businesses.
