Cal Lane

Cal Lane (born 1968, Laneville, Alabama; died 2016, Caledonia, Ontario) was a Canadian sculptor best known for her intricate lace-like sculptures made from industrial steel and other metal objects like shovels, oil drums, and vehicles. Lane often juxtaposed the perceived masculine qualities of industrial materials with the traditionally feminine craft of lacemaking, creating a dialogue about gender, labor, and the cultural value associated with each.

Her work explored themes of contradiction and transformation. She frequently used a plasma cutter to create delicate patterns and designs within the rigid metal, referencing historical lace designs and patterns while commenting on the changing roles of women in modern society and the evolution of industrial processes. Lane's sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are held in numerous public and private collections. She received her MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2001.
