C/1911 S3 (Beljawsky)
C/1911 S3 (Beljawsky) is a non-periodic comet discovered by Russian astronomer Sergei Ivanovich Beljawsky (also transliterated as Belyavsky) on September 28, 1911. The designation "C/" indicates that it is a non-periodic comet; that is, its orbital period is so long (possibly thousands of years or more) that it has not been observed to return within human timescales, or its orbit is hyperbolic, meaning it will not return at all. The "1911" indicates the year of discovery, and "S3" is a designation based on the discovery period within the year – in this case, "S" indicates it was discovered in the second half of September, and the "3" signifies it was the third comet discovered in that specific period.
Little is known about the comet's orbital parameters and physical characteristics beyond initial observations. Due to the limitations of observational technology at the time and the comet's long period, recovering it for future observations is highly improbable. As such, the historical data gathered during its initial apparition remains the primary source of information about C/1911 S3 (Beljawsky). It likely reached naked-eye visibility, being observed during its closest approach to Earth.
