Burray
Burray is one of the islands of Orkney, Scotland. It is located in the Orkney archipelago, lying between the islands of Scapa and South Ronaldsay. Burray is connected to both these islands by causeways, part of the Churchill Barriers, which were built during World War II to protect the British fleet anchored in Scapa Flow.
The island is primarily low-lying, with fertile agricultural land. Historically, Burray's economy was based on farming and fishing. Today, while agriculture remains important, tourism also plays a role.
The main settlement on Burray is the village of Burray, located on the western side of the island. The island features archaeological sites, reflecting its long history of human habitation.
The name "Burray" is believed to derive from the Old Norse "Borgarey," meaning "fort island" or "island of the broch."
