Buffalo River (Wisconsin)
The Buffalo River is a 77-mile-long (124 km) river located in northwestern Wisconsin, United States. It is a tributary of the Mississippi River. The river originates in southwestern Bayfield County and flows generally southwestward through Washburn, Douglas, and Buffalo counties before joining the Mississippi River near Cochrane, Wisconsin.
The Buffalo River is known for its scenic beauty, particularly the heavily wooded areas it traverses. It is a popular destination for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The river's name is believed to be derived from the American bison that once roamed the area.
The river's watershed is primarily agricultural and forested. Efforts are underway to protect and improve water quality in the Buffalo River watershed through best management practices and conservation programs. Several communities are located along the river's course, including the village of Waumandee.
