Buceros

Buceros is a genus of birds in the hornbill family, Bucerotidae. These large birds are native to Asia, specifically Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. The genus is characterized by its members' prominent casque atop their bills, which varies in size and shape depending on the species.

Buceros hornbills are primarily frugivorous, feeding mainly on fruits. They supplement their diet with insects, small reptiles, and other small animals. They are typically found in tropical and subtropical forests.

The breeding behavior of Buceros hornbills is distinctive. The female seals herself inside a tree cavity using a mixture of mud, droppings, and food remains, leaving only a narrow slit. The male then provides food for the female and chicks through this slit. Once the chicks are ready to fledge, the female breaks out of the nest.

Several species within the Buceros genus are facing threats due to habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these iconic birds and their natural habitats.
