Eckertal
Eckertal is a village and a former municipality in the district of Goslar, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Since 1 January 2017, it is part of the town Bad Harzburg.
Eckertal is situated on the Ecker river, which forms the border with Saxony-Anhalt to the east. The village lies in the Harz mountain range, known for its scenic landscapes and hiking trails.
Historically, Eckertal was located near a significant border between East and West Germany during the Cold War. The area was heavily fortified and marked by fences and watchtowers as part of the inner German border. Today, remnants of the border fortifications are preserved as historical sites and memorials.
The name Eckertal derives from the Ecker river valley ("Tal" means valley in German). The village's economy is primarily based on tourism and forestry.
