Epulones

The Epulones (Latin, from epulae, "feasts") were a Roman priestly college (Latin: collegium) established in 196 BC. They were officially titled the tresviri epulonum (three men of the feasts), later increased to septemviri epulonum (seven men of the feasts) by Julius Caesar. The college's primary duty was to organize and oversee public feasts (Latin: epulae) in honor of the gods, particularly during festivals such as the Ludi Romani (Roman Games).

The Epulones were distinct from other priestly colleges in that their function was primarily focused on the practical arrangements of religious banquets. Their responsibility extended to ensuring the proper equipment, attendees, and decorum were observed during these important public rituals. They managed the provision of food, seating arrangements, and sometimes even hired musicians or entertainers for the occasion.

The creation of the Epulones was likely motivated by a desire to alleviate the burden on existing priestly colleges, such as the Pontifices and Augures, allowing them to concentrate on their more specialized religious duties. By delegating the logistical and organizational aspects of public feasts, the Epulones contributed to the smooth execution of religious ceremonies and maintained the integrity of Roman religious traditions. The college existed until the late Roman Empire.
