Popular Alliance (Peru)

The Popular Alliance (Spanish: Alianza Popular) was a political coalition in Peru that existed primarily in the 1980s. It was formed by the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA), led by Alan García, along with smaller parties. The coalition's main goal was to unite center-left and left-leaning forces in Peruvian politics and support García's presidential campaigns.

The Popular Alliance played a significant role in Peruvian politics during a turbulent period marked by economic instability and the rise of violent insurgent groups like Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path). Alan García, as the APRA candidate and leader of the alliance, won the presidential election in 1985.

During García's presidency (1985-1990), the Popular Alliance governed Peru. The administration implemented policies aimed at stimulating the economy and addressing social inequalities. However, it was also plagued by hyperinflation, corruption allegations, and the escalating internal conflict with insurgent groups.

After García's first term, the Popular Alliance lost considerable political influence due to the economic crisis and public dissatisfaction. While APRA continued as a significant political force, the formal coalition structure of the Popular Alliance dissipated. Subsequent presidential campaigns by APRA did not resurrect the coalition in its original form. The legacy of the Popular Alliance is primarily associated with the first presidency of Alan García and its efforts to govern Peru during a challenging era.
