Brisbane Bandits (1989–1998)
The Brisbane Bandits were a professional baseball team based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, that competed in the Australian Baseball League (ABL) from 1989 to 1998. The team was one of the original eight franchises of the revitalized ABL, which sought to establish a strong professional baseball presence in the country.
The Bandits played their home games at various venues throughout Brisbane during their tenure, including the Brisbane Exhibition Ground and Chandler Ballpark. They experienced moderate success, often finishing mid-table in the league standings but failing to secure an ABL championship. The team was known for its roster of both Australian and international players, including some former Major League Baseball (MLB) players looking to extend their careers or gain experience.
The Brisbane Bandits ceased operations following the 1998 season due to financial difficulties and the restructuring of the Australian Baseball League. A new Brisbane Bandits team was established in 2010 as part of the re-formed Australian Baseball League. The original Brisbane Bandits (1989-1998) are thus distinct from the current team bearing the same name. They represent a specific period in Australian baseball history.
