Brigadny

Brigadny (Russian: бригадный) is a Russian military rank, equivalent to Brigadier. It existed in the Russian Imperial Army from 1722 to 1796 and in the Soviet Army from 1935 to 1940. It was a general officer rank, ranking below Major General and above Colonel. The title derives from "brigade," indicating command of a brigade-sized formation. The brigadny was equivalent to the rank of Brigadier General in many Western armies. The abolition of the rank in 1796 in the Imperial Army and in 1940 in the Soviet Army reflected organizational reforms that reduced the prominence of brigades as key tactical formations, favoring divisions and corps instead.
