Bridei I

Bridei I was a king of the Picts, ruling from approximately 550 to 580 AD. He is primarily known from the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum by Bede, where he is mentioned in the context of Columba's mission to convert the Picts. Bede describes Bridei as a powerful king who resided near the River Ness, likely at Craig Phadrig, close to modern Inverness.

Historical information about Bridei I is scarce, and much of what is known is derived from later sources, some of which may be unreliable. He is generally accepted to have been a significant figure in Pictish history, as his reign coincides with a period of growing Pictish power and the expansion of their territory. Columba's visit suggests that Bridei I held considerable influence and control over the Pictish kingdoms at that time. The presence of a king like Bridei I also indicates a more centralised political structure amongst the Picts than previously thought. He is considered a key figure in the transition of the Picts towards Christianity. While the extent of his conversion or that of his people is unknown, Columba's presence marked a significant step in that direction. The Annals of Ulster make no mention of Bridei, suggesting that the sources are not complete or that records may have been lost.
