Tim Smith (baseball)
Tim Smith (born January 6, 1962, in Brookhaven, Mississippi) is a former professional baseball outfielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Montreal Expos and the New York Mets from 1986 to 1992.
Smith was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 1st round (16th overall) of the 1983 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with the Expos on April 9, 1986.
Smith is perhaps best known for his role with the 1986 New York Mets team that won the World Series. He joined the Mets mid-season and quickly became a fan favorite with his speed and aggressive play. However, Smith is also remembered for a critical error in Game 6 of the World Series, when a ground ball went through his legs, allowing the Boston Red Sox to rally and eventually win the game in extra innings. The Mets ultimately won Game 7 and the World Series.
Following his time with the Mets, Smith played briefly with the Expos again before retiring from professional baseball. After his playing career, Smith has worked in various coaching and instructional roles.
