Bragozzo

A bragozzo is a type of small, two-masted lugger traditionally used in the northern Adriatic Sea, particularly around the Venetian Lagoon and Chioggia. Characterized by its shallow draft, distinctive bright colors (often with geometric patterns and religious symbols), and two large lateen sails, the bragozzo was primarily a fishing vessel. Its shallow draft allowed it to navigate the lagoon's shallow waters and access areas other boats could not. While variations existed between specific boats and regions, common features included a flat bottom, a wide beam for stability, and two masts raked forward. They were typically crewed by a small number of fishermen. The use of bragozzi declined significantly during the 20th century with the advent of motorized vessels, though some remain as preserved historical boats or for tourism.
