Booches
Booches, often styled "Booch's," refers to a historic and once-popular billiard hall and restaurant located in Columbia, Missouri, near the University of Missouri campus. Established in 1884, Booches gained renown for its no-frills atmosphere, its signature cheeseburgers served on wax paper (often described as "perfect"), and its enduring presence as a gathering place for students, faculty, alumni, and local residents.
The name is derived from its founder, William "Booch" Johnston. Over its long history, Booches maintained a consistent commitment to simplicity and tradition, eschewing modernization in favor of preserving its original character. The interior, characterized by its well-worn pool tables, minimal décor, and the aroma of grilling burgers, fostered a sense of nostalgia and camaraderie.
Beyond its reputation as a billiards and burger establishment, Booches served as a community hub. It was a place where generations of students forged friendships, celebrated victories, and mourned losses. The informal setting and consistent quality contributed to its enduring appeal as a Columbia institution.
Booches closed its original location in 2012. A successor restaurant, preserving the Booches name and attempting to recreate the original's atmosphere and menu, opened in a different location in Columbia in 2013 and continues to operate. The legacy of the original Booches, however, remains a significant part of Columbia's cultural history.
