Black Butte (Glenn County, California)

Black Butte is a prominent volcanic butte located in Glenn County, California, approximately 8 miles (13 km) west of Orland. It is a defining feature of the western Sacramento Valley landscape. The butte rises sharply from the valley floor to an elevation of approximately 2,128 feet (648.6 meters).

Geologically, Black Butte is a volcanic plug, formed by the solidified magma of an ancient volcano. The surrounding softer sedimentary rock has eroded over time, leaving the more resistant volcanic plug standing as a prominent landmark. The rock composition is primarily basalt and andesite.

The butte and surrounding area are part of the Black Butte Lake Recreation Area, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Black Butte Lake, formed by the Black Butte Dam on Stony Creek, is located immediately west of the butte. The recreation area provides opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities.

The vegetation on Black Butte is characterized by chaparral and oak woodlands, typical of the California foothills. Wildlife in the area includes deer, wild pigs, coyotes, and various bird species.

Black Butte is visible from much of the northern Sacramento Valley, serving as a recognizable landmark and navigation point. It holds historical and cultural significance, likely used as a landmark by indigenous peoples and early settlers.
