Bisoxatin

Bisoxatin is a synthetic stimulant laxative formerly used to treat constipation. It belongs to the diphenylmethane group of laxatives, similar to bisacodyl.

Mechanism of Action: Bisoxatin acts primarily by stimulating peristalsis in the colon. This stimulation is believed to be caused by the activation of sensory nerve endings in the intestinal wall, leading to increased motility and the propulsion of fecal matter. Additionally, it reduces water absorption from the colon, further contributing to the softening of stool.

Administration and Dosage: Bisoxatin was typically administered orally. The dosage varied depending on the severity of constipation and individual patient factors.

Adverse Effects: Potential side effects of bisoxatin included abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalances, particularly with prolonged or excessive use. Allergic reactions were also possible.

Contraindications: Bisoxatin was contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug, intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdomen, or ulcerative colitis. It was also not recommended for long-term use.

Availability: Bisoxatin is no longer widely available due to concerns regarding its potential for liver toxicity and the availability of alternative laxatives with better safety profiles. It has been withdrawn from the market in many countries.
