Badkuh

Badkuh (also sometimes transliterated as Bad Kouh, Badkuh-e-bala, or similar variations) refers to a historical and geographic region in northeastern Afghanistan, primarily situated in the upper reaches of the Murghab River and its tributaries. Historically, Badkuh constituted a relatively isolated and rugged area inhabited by various groups, including primarily Aimaq Hazara and other ethnic groups.

The term "Badkuh" translates roughly to "windy mountain" or "windy highlands" in Persian-related languages, reflecting the region's mountainous terrain and strong winds.

Historically, Badkuh was a loosely defined area, its boundaries shifting depending on political control and geographic considerations. It often served as a buffer zone between larger empires or political entities vying for influence in Central Asia. Due to its challenging terrain, central authorities frequently had limited direct control over the inhabitants of Badkuh, which fostered a degree of independence and tribal autonomy.

Agriculture in Badkuh is typically subsistence-based, relying on small-scale farming and livestock herding adapted to the harsh climate and limited arable land.
