BG Group
BG Group was a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in Reading, United Kingdom. It was formerly a part of British Gas, privatized in 1986, and demerged in 1997 to form BG plc. BG Group was primarily involved in the exploration, production, and distribution of natural gas and oil. Its operations spanned across various countries, including but not limited to, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, Egypt, and the United States.
The company's activities included upstream exploration and production, as well as midstream activities such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. BG Group held significant interests in major LNG projects globally, including those in Queensland, Australia.
In 2015, Royal Dutch Shell announced its intention to acquire BG Group. The acquisition was completed in 2016, and BG Group ceased to exist as an independent entity, becoming integrated into Shell's operations. The merger significantly increased Shell's proven oil and gas reserves, particularly in the LNG sector, and broadened its global footprint.
The acquisition also led to a reorganization of Shell's business, with many of BG Group's former assets and projects being incorporated into Shell's existing business units. Following the merger, the BG Group name was retired, and its corporate identity was subsumed into Royal Dutch Shell.
