Sunshine (1973 film)
Sunshine is a 1973 American made-for-television drama film directed by Joseph Sargent and starring Cristina Raines in the lead role of Kate Hayden, a young woman diagnosed with terminal bone cancer.
The film chronicles Kate's experiences as she copes with her illness, her relationships, and her desire to leave behind a legacy for her infant daughter, Jill. Kate decides to record a journal of her life experiences on a cassette recorder for Jill to listen to when she grows older. The film emphasizes Kate's positive attitude and her efforts to embrace life fully despite her grim prognosis.
"Sunshine" was notable for its use of contemporary folk-pop music, particularly the song "Sunshine on My Shoulders" by John Denver, which became closely associated with the film. The film's soundtrack became a commercial success.
Due to its emotional narrative and relatable themes of love, loss, and mortality, "Sunshine" resonated with audiences and was a significant ratings success for CBS. It spawned a sequel in 1975, titled "Sunshine Part II," also known as "My Sweet Lady," featuring a different cast.
