Grooverider

Grooverider, (born Raymond Bingham, 1967, London, England) is a British electronic music DJ and producer, widely recognized as a pioneering figure in the development of jungle and drum and bass music. He is renowned for his technical mixing ability, diverse selection, and influential radio presence.

Early Career and Formation of Rage:

Grooverider's career began in the mid-1980s, playing soul, funk, and hip-hop at various parties and events in London. He met Fabio (Fitzroy Heslop) in the late 1980s, and the two formed a DJ partnership that would become hugely influential. In 1988, they secured a residency at Heaven nightclub in London, launching their legendary night "Rage". Rage played a pivotal role in the evolution of early rave music, transitioning from acid house to hardcore and eventually laying the groundwork for jungle and drum and bass.

Contribution to Jungle and Drum and Bass:

As hardcore evolved, Grooverider and Fabio were at the forefront, embracing the faster tempos, complex breakbeats, and heavy basslines that defined jungle. Grooverider's sets showcased a diverse range of tracks, often incorporating elements of reggae, dub, and hip-hop. He was instrumental in bringing new producers and tracks to a wider audience.

Radio Broadcasting:

Grooverider has also had a significant impact through his radio broadcasting career. He hosted shows on pirate radio stations such as Phase One and Kiss FM, and later on BBC Radio 1. His Radio 1 show, which he co-hosted with Fabio for 14 years, was a crucial platform for showcasing new drum and bass talent and promoting the genre globally.

Producer and Label Owner:

In addition to his DJing and radio work, Grooverider is also a producer. He released his debut album, Mysteries of Funk, in 1998. He also founded the record label Prototype Recordings, which released music from emerging and established drum and bass artists.
