Ayr Pass is a mountain pass located in the Southern Alps of New Zealand's South Island. Situated within the Craigieburn Forest Park, it provides access between the Waimakariri River valley to the north and the Rakaia River valley to the south. The pass reaches an altitude of approximately 900 meters (2,953 feet).
Ayr Pass is primarily utilized for tramping (hiking) and mountain biking. The track crossing the pass is known for its challenging terrain and scenic views. It is typically accessed from either the Cass or Wilberforce valleys.
The name "Ayr" likely originates from a Scottish connection, as many place names in the Canterbury region of New Zealand reflect Scottish heritage. The pass is not generally considered a major transportation route and sees more recreational than commercial traffic. Conditions on the pass can be variable and depend heavily on weather and seasonal factors, requiring proper preparation and equipment for those traversing it.
