Stanisław Srokowski (writer)
Stanisław Srokowski (born November 10, 1936, in Hucisko Brodzkie, Poland) is a Polish writer, poet, playwright, literary critic, and screenwriter. He is best known for his works dealing with the themes of Polish-Ukrainian relations, particularly the Volhynian Massacre and its aftermath.
Srokowski's writing often explores the complex history and suffering endured by Poles in the former Eastern Borderlands (Kresy Wschodnie) of pre-war Poland. He is a controversial figure in some circles due to his unflinching portrayal of Ukrainian nationalism and its role in the atrocities committed against Polish civilians during World War II.
His notable works include the collection of short stories Nienawiść (Hatred), which directly addresses the Volhynian Massacre, and the novel Ukraiński Pocałunek (Ukrainian Kiss). These works have been translated into several languages and have sparked considerable debate in Poland and Ukraine.
Srokowski has received numerous literary awards for his contribution to Polish literature. He remains an active voice in discussions surrounding Polish-Ukrainian historical reconciliation. He is often published in Polish periodicals and continues to comment on contemporary political and social issues related to Poland and Ukraine.
