Axone (film)
Axone is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language black comedy drama film directed by Nicholas Kharkongor. The film is centered around a group of North East Indian migrants in Delhi as they attempt to cook a traditional Naga dish, axone, made with fermented soybeans, for a wedding. The strong and pungent smell of the axone creates conflict with their neighbors, leading to comedic and dramatic situations that explore themes of racism, cultural identity, and prejudice faced by North Easterners in mainland India.
The film stars Sayani Gupta, Vinay Pathak, Dolly Ahluwalia, Adil Hussain, Lin Laishram, Tenzing Dalha, Rohan Joshi, and Jimpa Bhutia in prominent roles. Axone premiered at the 2019 London Film Festival and was subsequently released on Netflix. The film received positive reviews for its performances, humor, and sensitive portrayal of social issues. While some critics found the comedic elements uneven, Axone was largely praised for raising awareness about the marginalization and discrimination faced by North Eastern communities in India and for its nuanced exploration of cultural clashes and prejudice.
