Autostrada A22 (Italy)
The Autostrada A22, also known as the Autostrada del Brennero (Brenner Motorway), is a major motorway in Italy connecting Modena in Emilia-Romagna with the Austrian border at the Brenner Pass in the Alps. It's a crucial north-south transportation corridor through Italy and a key part of the European route E45. The A22 is approximately 315 kilometers (196 miles) long.
The road is a toll road, managed by the Autostrada del Brennero S.p.A. The tolls are generally calculated based on distance traveled and vehicle type. It is a heavily trafficked route, particularly during peak tourist seasons, as it provides access to popular vacation destinations in the Dolomites, the Italian Alps, and Austria.
The A22 passes through diverse landscapes, ranging from the Po Valley to the high Alpine terrain. Significant cities along or near the route include Modena, Verona, Trento, and Bolzano/Bozen. The motorway is known for its engineering challenges, particularly in the mountainous sections, requiring numerous tunnels and viaducts. It also features numerous service areas and rest stops along its length.
The Autostrada del Brennero is of strategic importance for international trade and tourism between Italy and Central Europe.
