Atrani

Atrani is a town and comune on the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of southwestern Italy. It is located to the east of Amalfi, only a short distance away. It is the smallest comune in Italy by area, measuring only 0.12 square kilometers (0.046 sq mi).

Known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, Atrani is a popular tourist destination, although less crowded than some of its neighboring towns. Its small size and picturesque setting contribute to its charm.

Historically, Atrani has been an important location, dating back to Roman times. In the 9th century, it was a part of the Duchy of Amalfi, serving as a defense point. For a time, it even rivaled Amalfi in political importance. The church of San Salvatore del Birecto, dating back to the 10th century, is where the Doges of Amalfi were crowned. The town's layout is characterized by narrow streets, arches, courtyards, and houses clustered together, rising from the beach upwards.

Notable sights include the aforementioned church of San Salvatore del Birecto, the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maddalena, and the Grotta dei Santi (Grotto of the Saints), a natural cave containing Byzantine frescoes. The main piazza, Piazza Umberto I, is a central gathering place.

Atrani continues to be a fishing village, and tourism plays a significant role in its modern economy.
