Arthur Barton (bishop)

Arthur Barton (1907-1999) was an Anglican bishop in the second half of the 20th century. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and ordained a priest in 1932. He served in various parishes in Ireland before becoming Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, in 1958.

In 1962, Barton was elected Bishop of Cashel and Emly, Waterford and Lismore, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. During his episcopate, he was known for his commitment to ecumenism and his pastoral care. He played an active role in inter-church dialogue and sought to foster good relations between the Anglican and Roman Catholic communities in Ireland. After his retirement, he continued to be involved in church affairs, writing and lecturing on theological topics. He died in Dublin in 1999.
