Arruza (film)
Arruza is a 1972 American documentary film directed by Budd Boetticher. The film chronicles the life and career of Mexican bullfighter Carlos Arruza. Boetticher, a long-time aficionado of bullfighting, had initially planned to make a fictionalized account of Arruza's life starring Arruza himself in the late 1950s. However, Arruza's tragic death in a car accident in 1966 forced Boetticher to rework the project into a documentary.
The film utilizes existing footage of Arruza's bullfights, interviews with people who knew him, and location shots of Mexico to portray the bullfighter's skill, bravery, and complex personality. It explores Arruza's rivalry with other prominent bullfighters, his dedication to his craft, and the inherent dangers of bullfighting.
Arruza is notable for its long and troubled production history. Boetticher struggled for years to secure funding and complete the film. It is considered by many to be a passion project for Boetticher and reflects his deep admiration for Arruza and bullfighting. The film, despite its documentary nature, maintains some elements of Boetticher's original planned narrative, focusing on the dramatic and artistic aspects of bullfighting.
