AppGratis
AppGratis was a mobile application discovery service for iOS devices, primarily focused on offering one paid application for free each day. It operated by promoting specific apps to its user base, often generating a significant surge in downloads for the featured app.
The service was founded in 2010 and quickly gained popularity among iOS users looking to discover new apps and take advantage of temporary free offers. AppGratis worked by partnering with app developers who were willing to temporarily discount their apps to zero cost in exchange for increased visibility and user acquisition.
In April 2013, Apple removed AppGratis from the App Store, citing violations of App Store guidelines related to app promotion and the creation of a store-within-a-store experience. Specifically, Apple's concerns revolved around the application's ability to push notifications promoting other apps, which was deemed to circumvent the intended functionality of the App Store.
Following its removal from the App Store, AppGratis attempted to adapt its business model, exploring alternative methods for app discovery and promotion. However, the removal significantly impacted its reach and influence. The company eventually ceased operations.
